San Diego speaks out against Poverty War and Racism on Rosa Parks Day
Twenty-five activists gathered at the corner of Euclid and Imperial, which is the center of a mainly Black and Latin@ working class community at noon on Saturday, Dec. 3. What followed was a street meeting against poverty, racism, and war, with outreach to passing motorists with flyers.
At 12:45, led by a banner reading FromIraq to New Orleans, Stop the War Against the Poor!, the protestors stepped into the street and marched to the Malcolm X Library a short distance way, for an indoor rally and film showing.
Mary Taburro of San Diego FIST - Fight Imperialism, Stand Together chaired. The speakers included Minister Joe Williams, a longtime community activist; Ruth Vela, FIST leader and Chicana and border activist; Brother Eddie Muhammad, Nation of Islam; Tukufu Kalonji, Seruj Institute of Effective Socialization; Justino Jiménez, political rap artist and San Diego FIST activist; and keynote speaker, John Parker, West Coast coordinator of the International Action Center.
All of the presentations were inspiring and all the speakers noted the need to build more unity among all the communities struggling for peace and justice. Clearly, this meeting was an important contribution to that same goal.
